Nautical Archaeology Workshop PDF Print E-mail

April 25-26

MAST 11th Annual Dinner
April 25

Each year, the National Museum of the Great Lakes (NMGL) and the Maritime Archaeological Survey Team (MAST) work together to train people interested in our Submerged Cultural Heritage.
Our training this year will take place the National Museum of the Great Lakes
1701 Front Street  Toledo, OH  43605

This workshop is for anyone interested in the history of our Great Lakes - divers and non-divers alike.  The class is a total of three days - 2 days of classroom work on April 25-26 and one day of practical practice on either May 16 or 17.
You will learn why we preserve shipwrecks, the tools and techniques used, laws and ethics, and much, much, more.

There are two levels of training - Basic and Advanced.  The Basic level is for anyone that has not before been a part of MAST or our programs.  Advanced training requires the prerequisite of the Basic class taken in a prior year.  The cost of each class is $125 and includes all of your workbooks, lunch for two days, and all the instruction!

This is a great class to take with your buddy!  Have you already taken the class, encourage a family member, friend, dive partner, work associate to take it.  Have you already taken the Basic?  Think about taking the Advanced class to further your instruction.

Don't forget about the MAST 11th annual dinner.  We have an exciting program given by Tamara Thomsen, the Wisconsin State Underwater Archaeologist.  This is a great time to hear what else is going on around the Great Lakes, meet other archaeology enthusiasts, and learn more about our programs.  Dinner will be at the Maumee Bay State Park and is only $35.

NABS Diver of the Year PDF Print E-mail

Congrats to CDC diver Dr. Leonard E. Small, who was named the National Association of Black Scuba Divers Diver of the Year at the NABS Summit in Cozumel, Mexico.  He received this award due to his aggressive approach to diving and dive training.

Leonard began his sport diving activities at CDC with NAUI & PADI OW certification in 2011. Continuing to train he became an Advanced Diver in 2013, Nitrox Diver in 2013, and NAUI Rescue Diver in 2014, all though CDC

Leonard has over 180 dives, diving 80 to 90 times per year.  He met his goal to dive 100 times in 2014. His diving experience includes Cozumel, Jupiter Fl, Florida Keys, West Palm Beach, Dominican Republic, Roatan, Bonaire, Gilboa, and other quarries in Ohio.

He has been expanding his diving abilities by taking classes and seminars.  He completed his rescue class in June of 2014, and recently completed dry suit training.  He has volunteered at ScubaFest, the scuba dive show in Ohio. He is a volunteer diver at Manatee Springs at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and has taken training on underwater photography and fish identification.  He has been required to travel to FL for family business and has used those opportunities to dive in places such as the Blue Herron Bridge, (Riviera Beach, FL.).

He has been instrumental in the re-establishment of the Cincinnati Underwater Explorers.  This was no easy feat as the past members had dispersed though out the country.  Three of the members had name changes, two moved to TX, three to CA, one each to FL, KY, and GA.  In order to acquire new members Leonard visited dive shops, quarries, swimming pools and other areas where divers may be located.  He collected these names and encouraged them to join NABS and was able to get enough dues paying members to re-establish C.U.E.  He searched out public locations with meeting rooms to host the C.U.E. meetings.  Leonard has chaired meetings in homes, restaurants, and stores such as Bass Pro, thus exposing NABS and scuba diving to individuals (customers in the stores) who normally would not have an interest in water sports, or are not familiar with NABS. He has reached out to divers through Ohio through ScubaFest, quarries, and dive shops and has recruited members 100 miles from Cincinnati.

Again, congrats Dr. Small.  This is a well deserved award!

Date: TBA

Cost: $115

The tuition includes text book, classroom, and confined water session.  Not included are any quarry fees for the two required open water dives.  Time and place for the dives TBD, but you won't have to worry about cold water.  You'll be diving dry!
